state of mind

the evolving idea

The fast advance of digital media gave the mankind the opportunity to think in different
dimensions. The virtual space, the virtual architecture enables designers and architects
to reach the boundless imaginary mental space without the restrictions of still limited
possibilities in the physical space.
It is very essential to keep track on where we're going. The evolution of the current matter
is a very good prediction of what's about to happen. Being good doesn't necessarily mean being
contemporary, maybe it's a matter of being able to develop, evolve, transform - being able to
replicate the evolving needs of an evolving society.

nature is the way

organic, zoomorphic, kinetic, breeding or simply natural architecture

Millions of years of evolution have led the current animate and inanimate world to its
current state. For all that time Nature has been developing to accomplish the beauty and
the variety of forms, species & creations. There is nothing more natural then
the way water digs out the cliffs, winds form out the desserts, trees building up their
structures in the way up to the light, each species finding its own place in the chain
and develops, creates, breeds. There it is: beauty, variety, movements,
structures, adaptability etc ...
Understanding nature's language, translating it with the means of the latest multimedia
and technology advantages of our modern world is a way to coexist in a better harmony,
a way to find higher level of understanding of what’s actually happening around us.

caution its a blobby trap!

relativity of forms & movements

Blobs, Cubes or both?!

Sometimes its difficult to tell the difference between the blOb and the BLoB - its because of
its blobby nature. Luckily we have a measure strongly implemented in our minds - the straight
line, the right angle, the rigidness of a cube. Most of the artifacts that surround us are of
that nature. We are used to them; we might be quite confused in a room without a corner or
a straight line. When perceiving form its natural for the human mind to compare objects
and movements. The beauty and the softness of a curved line is much more influential when related
to the rigid body that complements or contradicts it, a movement is much more provocative when related
to the static object ...

This scheme is an interpretation of the classical pantheon in Rome.
The project is an inverted pantheon in which the centre, representing
the endless metaphysical knowledge, is not penetrable, but only
visible as a reflection through projected light. This represents
absolute human knowledge as an untouchable and impenetrable source,
which we can only experience as fragmented, projected details within the structure.
Walking along the path a viewer can see images, sculptures, digital projections
of cultural and social beliefs. The experience of walking through the tunnel and the
revealing light openings is a different architectural dynamic to a building that
celebrates the antics, deities or morals of a society.
In this project the representation of its function is virtual,
while the architecture is well defined and the viewer walks through a single route,
rather than wandering about an open space.

The project was published on the cover of the brochure of the
WEB3D Art 2002 Symposium - Siggraph / Tempe Arizona USA

The project is based on the desire to emphasize
the independence of the functional elements of the complex,
combining them in a unified composition and expressing the
hierarchy of the internal relations of each separate space.
The accent is on the main functional elements which are
ordered and scaled similar to the structure of a leaf.
These utilitarian structures become architectural elements and once
expressed in the exterior and translated through giant consoles the forms
emerge from the environment connecting with the main atrium space through staircases and ramps.
The huge atrium space is covered by the gentle structures of a glazed dome organizing and combining
all the elements in one geometrical and structural unity.
There is a desire of a smooth transition from
the crystal organic structures in the middle - to the rigid and solid forms in the periphery
of the building thus creating an independent and structural unity that can sit easily in any environment.
The center of the building creates the structural and public heart of the complex leading to the separate
and more private spaces of each cinema hall, emphasizing the relation between the function and the form.
The huge atrium space is covered by hierarchically ordered structures
holding a glazed dome structurally and visually
resembling the order and the way a leaf is formed.
The columns and the beams in the atrium are formed
in similarity to the tree structures thus creating
structural and visual unity of the whole complex -
    externally and internally.

2001 - awarded for best diploma project - given by the Union of Architects in Bulgaria (UAB)
2001 - award for original idea - given by the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria
2001 - award for best presentation - given by the Society of Architects at UACEG
